Post #GivingTuesday: Tips For Maintaining Relationships

In just 5 short years, #GivingTuesday has become one of the largest days for nonprofit fundraising throughout the world. But how can nonprofits turn these first-time donors into long-term, valuable relationships?

#GivingTuesday is a great opportunity for nonprofits to get the attention of first-time donors. In 2015 alone, $116.7 Million was collectively raised online from over 700,000 individuals donating an average of $107. But now that this years #GivingTuesday is behind us, how do nonprofits create meaningful relationships from these one-time donors? We’ve come up with a few helpful pointers about what you can do to foster long-term relationships with your #GivingTuesdaStockSnap_J04BJ1VCGKy donors.

1. Say thank you. Sending your donors a message of gratitude is always your first step when building positive relationships. Let them know that your organization is happy and appreciative of their gift. A littlethanks goes a long way!

2. Keep donors involved. Whether its through emailers, social media, or even snail mail, keep your donors involved with your organization! Many of your first-time donors may not fully understand the scope of what your organization does, so send out regular emails (or other forms of communication) to keep them interested and aware of your organization’s activities.

This could even include inviting them to your fundraisers/events, or offering other opportunities to volunteer or give back.

3. Stay transparent. Often times, people are more apt to make a donation or volunteer if they can see the direct impact of their support. Keep your donors up-to-date with the progress made from their donated funds, and they may be more inclined to continue donating or volunteering into the future.

These are just three of many ways to foster positive relationships with your donors. Just take a little time to thank your donors and keep them involved and up-to date with your organization’s mission, and you’re on your way to broadening your donor base and maintaining the spirit of giving well into the new year!
