When recent medical school graduate, Faii Ong, was told that nothing could be done for a patient he cared for, he turned to the technology behind his childhood toys to change her life.Gyrogearx299

For millions of individuals suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, or other neurological conditions affecting movement, the groundbreaking technology behind the GyroGlove is life-changing. When Faii Ong was faced with the challenge of caring for a 103 year-old Parkinson’s patient who was no longer responding to medication, he turned to gyroscopes to help improve her motor functions.

A gyroscope is “a device that uses Earth’s gravity to help determine orientation” that consists of a rotor and a spinning axis. Applications of this technology can span from something as simple as a spinning top to cutting-edge aerospace technology.

But how do gyroscopes actually help people with Parkinson’s? In GyroGlove’s case, they utilized this technology to create a small device that reduces up to 90% of tremors. It is designed specifically for people to be able to get through the many hands-on tasks that occur in daily life.

According to Ong, “Mechanical gyroscopes are like spinning tops: they alwys try to stay upright by conserving angular momentum…My idea was to use gyroscopes to instantaneously and proportionally resist a person’s hand movement, thereby dampening any tremors in the wearer’s hand.”

GyroGlove is a great example of what can happen when compassion and innovation are combined. With a little bit of creativity, lives can be changed for the better!
